HEAT - Who Is EligibleBenefits are available to all eligible persons regardless of race, religion, national origin, sex, age, or political belief. Households that meet the following three points of eligibility are eligible for LIHEAP/HEAT benefits: 1. Total household income is at or below 125% of poverty (see income chart below). 2.The household is “vulnerable,” i.e. they are responsible (either directly or indirectly) for paying their home heating costs. Indirectly means that a household pays rent and a landlord, trailer park, etc., uses part of that rent to help cover the cost of utilities. 3.The household has at least one person who is a U.S. citizen or has acceptable documents verifying they are in the country legally. For a list of acceptable documents, click on Acceptable USCIS documents. Good News: We will deduct 20% off income that is earned through employment of self-employment. Medical expenses, child support, or alimony that you paid in the qualifying month also may be deducted from your income. INCOME MUST BE GROSS INCOME, not net. Some types of income, like medical expenses not covered by insurance, can be deducted from income and are not counted when calculating HEAT program eligibility. If your household size is larger than listed above, please contact your local district office to find out your maximum allowable income. TABLE I 2007-08 FEDERAL POVERTY LEVEL & MONTHLY INCOME LIMITS
