There are many ways to participate in Utah’s 10-year plan to end homelessness. The easiest and quickest is to donate to a local homeless service provider which is a better use of your money than giving to panhandlers, many of whom aren’t actually homeless. Dial 211 and ask for a list of charities in your area. You may also donate to the Pamela Atkinson Homeless Trust Fund. Since its inception in 1988, the trust has funneled millions of dollars to Utah charities that aid the homeless, including shelters and caseworkers who canvass city streets for people in need of food, winter clothing or a warm blanket. Donations are made on line 19 of your Utah Income Tax Return, TC40. Select code 02 for the Pamela Atkinson Homeless Trust Fund. Or, write a check payable to, “Pamela Atkinson Homeless Trust Fund,” and mail it to: Jonathan Hardy, Division of Housing & Community Development, 324 S. State St., Suite 500, Salt Lake City, UT 84111 You can volunteer at a local charity. For a list of volunteer opportunities, dial 211. Or, attend a meeting of the Utah Homeless Coordinating Committee (see schedule below).
